Institutional Access

Institutional access makes it easy for multiple users at a medical center to use the software.   It involves the following:

  1. The institution adds SimulConsult to its list of web links so it is easy for people to find the URL.
  2. The institution adds SimulConsult to its "white list" of sites that can be launched without people being bothered by unnecessary security dialog boxes.
  3. SimulConsult recognizes the institutional IP numbers so people can use SimulConsult without logging in.  Institutional access is currently free if the steps 1 & 2 are taken.

To obtain institutional access to the phenome version, someone with authority in a department, residency program, medical center or medical school needs to do the following:

Step 1

Collect the IP number information using one of the following two approaches:

  • Do it yourself: Check the IP numbers that we detect for computers in locations for which you want institutional access.  Do this from relevant computers by clicking here.  The page will report an IP number in the format 123.132.12.13.  If the relevant locations all report numbers with the same first two numbers, we just need those two numbers to enable the whole group such as 123.132.*.*.
  • Get an administrator to do it: Ask your network administrator or medical librarian to look up the "IP masks" (subnet numbers) that the institution uses to access the public internet.  Typically this is one or more sequences in a format such as 123.132.*.*.  The IP numbers we need are the public IP numbers reported by the Web page here, not the private IP numbers used within internal networks:
    • 10.*.*.*
    • 127.*.*.*
    • 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
    • 192.168.*.*
    • 240.*.*.* - 255.*.*.*

Step 2

Send the IP number information to SimulConsult using the e-mail address here, and state your role in the institution, how you would like the institution to be listed.  When your IP address is recognized as having institutional access, the software will show "phenome" access, or, if you have arranged separately for access to the genome-phenome analyzer, "genome-phenome" access.

Step 3

The institution adds the SimulConsult software URL to its web links and tests that it is treated by their system as a friendly application.

The medical centers listed below already have institutional access.  If you are within one of these institutions and your location is not allowed to enter the software without a password use the procedure above to send us the IP number information for your location.   The medical centers are:

  • Boston University
  • Brown University
  • Buffalo Women and Children’s Hospital
  • Chicago Children's Memorial Hospital
  • Children's National Medical Center (Washington DC)
  • Columbia University
  • Cornell University
  • Geisinger Health System, Pennsylvania
  • Harvard University
  • Intermountain Health Care
  • Institute for Genetic engineering and Biotechnology, Bosnia & Herzegovina
  • Johns Hopkins University
  • Kaunas Child Development Clinic, Lithuania
  • Madigan Army Medical Center
  • Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn
  • Nemours Foundation
  • Pediatric Associates (Seattle Eastside area)
  • Stanford University
  • Toronto Sick Kids Hospital
  • University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • University of California, San Francisco
  • University of Michigan
  • University of Rochester
  • University of Washington, Seattle
  • Vilnius University Hospitals, Lithuania
  • Washington University (St. Louis)
  • Wolfson Medical Center (Israel)
  • Yale University

Please note that even if you have institutional access, you need an individual password (available free by clicking here) to do the following:

  • View the database
  • Submit information to the database
  • Have off-site access

Access to the Genome-Phenome Analyzer version of SimulConsult follows the same procedure as described above, except that access is provided to the version that imports and analyzes genome variant tables.
